Course Overview
The human immune system has two parts: acquired immunity and innate immunity. This short course introduces innate immunity - a general, or nonspecific immune mechanism. In this course students are introduced to key concepts, cellular players, and biochemical pathways that interplay to orchestrate the innate immune response.
Topics include;- Innate v acquired immunity
- Important barriers to pathogen entry
- Cells of the innate immune system (Neutrophils, Macrophages, Mast cells, Eosinophils, Dendritic Cells, Basophils, Natural killer cells)
- Innate defence mechanisms (Cellular - phagocytosis, Complement system, Inflammation)
- Interactions on the innate and acquired immune system
